Producers are developing a "horror-tinged spin-off" of the blockbuster film.
If you've been counting on your fingers and toes how much longer you'll have to wait until the studios deliver Aquaman 2, you might need a few more appendages. It's being reported that the film isn't set for release un December 16, 2022, but that doesn't mean that fans won't take another trip down to Atlantis soon. After Aquaman raked in over $1 billion, Warner Bros. studios and D.C. Comics want to capitalize off the momentum by delivering other parts of the underwater hero's storyline.
The Trench will hit theaters in the meantime and is described by The Hollywood Reporter as a "horror-tinged spinoff" that centers around the creatures who tormented the half-Atlantean/half-human. Aquaman producer Peter Safran told the publication, “We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
Unfortunately, neither Aquaman nor Mera (Amber Heard) will appear in the developing Trench project. “We’ve definitely taken a page from our Conjuring playbook, which is: You’ve got the mothership, which is Aquaman, but there are so many great stories to tell within that universe of itself, that Atlantean universe,” Safran said.
