Newton has had a lingering shoulder injury.
Cam Newton has been a huge part of the Carolina Panthers organization over the last few years. As the team's franchise QB, Newton led the team to a Super Bowl in 2016. Despite losing, Newton has proven himself as one of the most important players on the team. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Newton has had a lingering shoulder injury that forced him to sit out the last two games of this year's regular season.
Panthers owner David Tepper spoke about Newton's injury and the possibility that he may not play next season.
"If you told me he took a year off and could recover and be fully recovered and everything else, and that's what it took, an extra year, why wouldn't you do (that)?" Tepper told the Charlotte Observer.

Tepper than spoke about what the team would have to do if they lost their superstar QB.
“You know what you might be facing next year — or not facing," Tepper said. "Hopefully, Cam’s shoulder is fantastic and we’re all happy. If it’s not, you may need more cap space. You may need to be able to go out and find somebody."
As of right now, the Panthers organization are in discussions with Newton to determine if he will need to undergo surgery.
