As part of the upcoming Chinese New Year sneaker collection, Jordan designers were first drawn to the storytelling practice of ancient Chinese patchwork and quilting (also known as 百家衣 / baijiayi).
For centuries, Chinese patchwork has been given to children as a symbol of prosperity, strength and appreciation. Quilt pieces are sourced from multiple families in a community, which earned the patchwork a nickname, the “Hundred-families” robe.
"The design team applied this narrative method of collaged scraps to the creation of a geometric print that lines the Air Jordan XII, the Air Jordan XXXIII and collection apparel. Both shoes have a black and gold color combination with “reveal” elements for the print that allow it to be seen and worn in different ways — a first for the Jordan Brand “Chinese New Year” collection. The patchwork print includes references to all 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, and both shoes have a remixed, digitized “23” meant to resemble 2019’s “Year of the Pig” zodiac sign. On the apparel, the print is incorporated down the arms and legs."
The men's Air Jordan 12 will retail for $250, the AJ33 for $175, and the Kyrie 5 for $130. Check out some additional Nike purchase links below.
