“I feel the need, the need for speed.”
32 years ago, Tom Cruise stepped into a role that would define his entire career. Top Gun was a smash hit, it rocked the box office and shot Tom Cruise to the top of Hollywood stardom. In the film, Maverick, played by Cruise, is a young pilot who enters into a training program to become the Top Gun. Now, Maverick is back for a sequel three decades later.
Any movie that was a hit in the 80's is coming back around in some form. On Wednesday (May 30), Cruise took to social media to share the first official picture from the set of Top Gun: Maverick. In the picture, Maverick stands on a deck while looking at his F-14A Tomcat. The caption "Feel the need" is sprawled across the center of the picture, which is a nod to the famous line from the first film, “I feel the need, the need for speed.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel will follow Maverick and his crew as they deal with new technology. The creation of drones is making the use of pilots obsolete. Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy) is set to direct the film which is slated to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
