Morocco loses 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion.
For 94 minutes, Iran and Morocco went scoreless in their Group B opener at the 2018 World Cup. And then Moroccan substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz accidentally headed the ball into his own goal, giving the Iranian national team a 1-0 lead and their first World Cup victory since 1998.
Bouhaddouz, who entered the game in the second half, was attempting to defend a low cross off a set piece in extra time when disaster struck. The result marks Iran's second ever World Cup victory after a 2-1 win over the United States in France during the 1998 tournament.
As a result of today's victory, Iran picked up a crucial three points which currently puts them atop the standings in Group B, pending the result of today's much anticipated matchup between powerhouses Spain and Portugal. That game is scheduled to kickoff today at 2:00pm ET, airing on Fox.
